Christina Grimmie - The Next YouTube Popstar

Don't know who Christina Grimmie is? Then you should start getting familiar! Christina is only 16 years old and living in Marlton, NJ. Since joining YouTube back in February 2009 and uploading her first 2 videos, Don't Want To Be Torn by Miley Cyrus and Dear Friend by Stacie Orrico, she has caught the attention of many YouTube surfers. To date her video uploads have accumulated upwards to 53 MILLION (53,147,168 to be exact) views combined! Christina everyone from Celine Dion to Train to Lady Gaga to Justin Bieber to Christina Aguilera to Michael Jackson to anyone you send a request in for on her YouTube channel - zeldaxlove64.

We've all heard of Esmee Denters who caught the attention of Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber who grabbed the attention of Usher. And now, the next YouTube phenom, Christina Grimmie teamed up with Teen Queen Selena Gomez for the UNICEF Charity Concert at The Roxy, Tuesday, October 26, 2010 in Hollywood, CA. The concert was broadcasted live on UStream Live for all to watch around the world. On Tuesday she debuted 3 of her original songs.

We might have another Taylor Swift on our hands here! While introducing her song Liar Liar she tells onlookers, "I actually wrote this one about a bad relationship; we all have them. This person was very very good liar, so this is for you..." and snickers right before she starts singing. This one was my favorite of the set. By this song it seemed that she had gotten all the nerves out and her voice sounded the strongest.

When you watch her videos you will notice a couple things will always be seen - her keyboard and a lonesome single poster of Sonic the Hedgehog.  In a recent interview with Y106.9 she had stated that she is a "huge video game nerd;" so I guess that explains the poster and channel name!

Getting serious about the piano at the age of 11, Christina also mentions in the interview that the piano she plays in ALL of her videos is the first piano she had received when she was 12 years old.  Now, this I found the most interesting and impressive about Christina, she does not know how to read music.  Everything that you hear her play on her videos is all learned by ear and her own interpretations of the songs. AMAZING!!

If I could give her one piece of advice it would be to keep up the great work and to STOP pointing out your mistakes in each video.  Some of the best performers mess up and they know that we, as fans, notice if someone is wrong, but they don't mention it after the performance. Just enjoy the ride and know that you're doing something that most people are scared to do because they are afraid of what people will think.

A couple of my favorite covers:
Beat It - Michael Jackson
Request Medley of Various Artists
Shark In The Water - VV Brown

Which ones are your favorites???

Danny Jones - Singer/Songwriter

You ever wonder what happened to those contestants on American Idol that make it to Hollywood week and you don't quite understand why they didn't make it to the BIG stage? We all get to see what happens with the top 12 when they make it to the big stage. The cameras follow their every move. Some of them have their storyline written from the first day. But what we don't get to see are those other contestants that were good enough to make it to that second round of Hollywood week. So today I'm re-introducing you to Danny Jones.

American Idol Audition Song - Hit The Road Jack

I had the pleasure of meeting Danny about a week ago. You may know and recognize him from Season 9 American Idol auditions and Hollywood week. Upon meeting him, he was very down to earth. He recently just made the move out here to Orange County with one thing in mind. MUSIC! Once you listen to his music you will definitely be able to tell that his personality plays into his music. When I sat down to listen to some of his original work the first thing that came to mind was Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and Matt Costa. He was kind enough to sit and chat with me and as you read on you will get to know a little more about Danny Jones as an artist and what steps he's taking towards his successful career in music.

DesireeRose: I know that you recently moved out here from...

Danny Jones: I moved out here from Billings, Montana, my hometown, lived there practically my whole life. Um, I was born in Portland, Oregon but moved to Billings. It's always kind of been my dream [to move to California]. I came to California on a mission trip to help with the homeless my freshman year of high school and, ever since then, California has just kind of always been stuck in my mind. And it's always been the place I wanted to go, needed to go for my music.

DR: So music is your focus right?

DJ: Yea, music is definitely my main thing. I've been getting into acting and modeling and I'm having a lot of fun with it. But, as far as what drives me as a person, music definitely controls me; it pretty much defines who I am.

DR: How long have you been songwriting?

DJ: I've been writing music, um, as far as little dinky tunes on a piano go...since my freshman year in high school. But, as soon as I got a guitar around my sophomore and junior year I really started hammering out songs. Most of them back then were love songs.

DR: Typical (laughing)

DJ: Yea (laughing) I thought my heart was broken. But now I write about issues that can actually relate and events that are actually going on in my life. You can tell by my lyrics who I am and what is going on.

DR: Yea? Cool. So how would you describe your musical style?

DJ: Um, I used to say acoustic jazz, but people seem to get the wrong impression of that. There's no horns or anything. There's no big brass band behind me. It's pretty much me and my guitar. Kind of a Jack Johnson style except for I play slap guitar and I rap. I don't rap but it's more of a free style, a Jason Mraz type deal.  (Danny Jones Original Song - See Me)

DR: So would you say that Jason Mraz is someone that influences your music?

DJ: Yea, Jason Mraz was always one of my favorite artists. He's just so much different than anything you've ever heard. As soon as I heard him I just kind of latched on and started listening to a lot of his stuff. He inspired me because he was just someone who had a guitar and just wrote music. I mean, there are a lot of different elements that have added to my style. My best friend, Mike, is a songwriter and he is one of the main people that I look to.

DR: So you have a professional and personal influence?

DJ: Yea.

DR: That's always good, always someone there to look to and that you can relate to. So I know the last couple of weeks have probably been a whirlwind for you.  A lot of stuff coming at you that you probably weren't expecting. So how would you describe this last week for yourself?

DJ: It pretty much went from me living in Orange County, being scared that I wasn't going to be able to make it financially and even being scared to drive to Hollywood to try to get into auditions. And last week, one day I got a call. It was from Elite Fashion [Academy LA], came in for an interview and things just kind of took off. I did a fashion show the next day after the interview [and performed an opening number for the show]! Everything was moving so fast, it was kind of a blur but I was having so much fun. It was kind of a rush. Now I finally got my head straight and I'm finally realizing this is a good thing. Ya know, 'cause sometimes you do things so fast you don't realize if they aren't good for you or your career. But I realized this is right, this is the path God wants me on and I'm exactly where I need to be.

DR: As you know, you do have followers. You have already started getting yourself out there on the internet with videos of your music on YouTube. So what advice do you give to other artists, right now, that are scared to take that jump or take that chance?

DJ: Do whatever it takes to follow your dreams. Don't want to sound to cliche with "follow your dreams" but basically just do whatever it takes. Ya know, I was living in Billings, Montana and I think that's far enough away as it is. And it shows how passionate I am about my music that I drove out here. I got my first car right after senior year, a cheap little Chevy Malibu, and drove out here by myself. I started off living on a futon.

DR: The Hollywood dream! (Laughing)

DJ: Yup! (laughs) It takes a lot to do what I'm trying to do. It takes a lot of effort and energy. I used to be semi-lazy (I didn't know you could be semi-lazy) because my parents did a lot for me. So I just hung around, didn't want to get that initial job. But then I realized that I was going to have to do it once I got out here and start working really hard. So I'm here! It's tough, but it's what you have to do and you can do it if you really try.

DR: So have you played any gigs in the month you've moved out here? ...Or anything coming up?

DJ: I've played at several coffee shops trying to get my name out there. I am going to go talk to a place out here called Cafe Roma.

DR: Oh yeah?!

DJ: Which you probably know about. So I'm going to try to get a gig there. Nothing too big yet but hopefully in the upcoming weeks we'll have more to talk about!

DR: Great! Well thanks for your time and answering the questions. We'll definitely stay in touch. And let us know what gigs you have coming up so that we can send people your way to hear you live!

DJ: Definitely, thanks!

We will definitely be filling you in on how Danny in doing in weeks to come. So keep your eyes peeled for a follow up article on one of Los Angeles' next big artist!

Double Standard

Hello Blogosphere!  So this week I was watching one of my favorite stations, MTV, and I was a little shocked. I know we have all seen or heard about the infamous "Snooki Punch." If you don't recall or are not familiar, I will fill you in.

After an episode of Jersey Shore, back in December 2009, they were previewing the episode for the following week and low and behold the cast was out for a night on the town. In one segment, you see Snooki getting annoyed with this guy at the bar because he was trying to take shots with them. Then the guy just turns around an socks her one right in the face. The next day and until the episode aired it was ALL OVER the television. On news channels, entertainment shows, promos for the show, etc.  But, this time the tv would black out the exact time the Snooki would be getting punched.  It became a HUGE ethnic fight for it's "bad representation" of Italian Americans.  I don't know the statistics but I am pretty sure that episode probably had more viewers on that day then any other episode of the show that season.  I just think it's odd that with all of the stuff they would show on television now-a-days that MTV wouldn't show this 10 second confrontation.  And it's not like any of us haven't seen this before when we were out with our friends. This kind of thing happens all the time.  So "bad representation" or not, it's life. But man, was it great for publicity for the show. Don't ya think?

ABC News Covers Jersey Shore Snooki Punch

At the time I could kind of understand why people didn't want this to be shown on television. But then I'm sitting home on Tuesday, and found myself watching an episode of Teen Mom. Throughout the week you saw promos showing that is was going to be "the episode to watch." What really caught my attention was the clip they show of one of the couples, Amber and Gary.  Gary finals grows a pair and stands up to Amber, but she's not having it. They are standing at the top of the stairwell of her apartment, arguing as usual, when Gary tells her to basically just get out of his way and to stop yelling at him. She then just says she'll hit him, Gary calls her bluff and tells her to. And guess what....SHE DOES! Again, MTV did the same thing that they did with the Jersey Shore, show the actual hit on the preview for that weeks episode and then in all the promos show everything up to the hit and cut to the date and time of the next episode right before Amber's fist meets the side of Gary's face. The difference occurs on Tuesday when the episode airs. Now don't get me wrong I get that they were trying to get people aware of domestic violence, but how is it different than what happened to Snooki on the Jersey Shore.  I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Not going to lie, my jaw dropped.  Amber made a solid connection with the side of Gary's face.  You could even hear it when she did. There was no blurring of the hit or black out of the seconds that it took to happen. And what gets me, is that it didn't bring up a stir in the media at all. This stuff happens everyday but when it's happening to those families some people are afraid to speak about it, it's personal.  The news will cover a story on drunk stupidity but not cover a topic that is subsided by people's insecurities.

MTV Teen Mom: Amber Hits Gary

So my question is....What was the difference? What makes one episode worth blocking out and not the other.  Is it because one is a male hitting a female and the other is female hitting a male? Is it because one involved alcohol with people who should be acting like adults and the other involved teenagers who have a child? Is it because one episode someone is under the influence of alcohol and the other episode they are completely sober? Realistically none of this should matter. Both occurences are done by choices made. Both situations were instigated in some way by someone.  We definitely only see the build up that they want us to see. Media is aware that this stuff happens all the time, but they actually get it on film.

Can people learn from other people's mistakes? Absolutely. So why should one incident be ok to show and not another?

This doesn't mean that I'm going to boycot the shows because I'm definitely not. But I just found it weird that they would be forced to block out one incident and not the other.
